About Richard Ritter

Dr. Richard Ritter is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a special interest and expertise in athletic injuries. Dr. Ritter specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of knee and shoulder problems, sports injuries, ligament and tendon disorders, fractures, and arthritic conditions. Dr. Ritter attended Columbia University in New York where he majored in pre-med biology and played four years of college football. Injuries he experienced during high school and college motivated him to become a physician and orthopedist. He received his doctor of medicine from the University of Health Sciences - Chicago Medical School, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his general surgery internship at New York University Medical Center and continued his residency in orthopedic surgery at New York University Medical Center - Hospital for Joint Diseases. During that time, he received training in pediatric orthopedics at Shriner's Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Ritter completed his subspecialty fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. He served as an assistant team physician for the New York Jets, the New York Rangers, Hofstra University, Hunter College, and NYU athletic teams. He has extensive training and experience in the most innovative treatments for treating sports injuries and athletic trauma. He currently serves as a team physician for several Long Island high school athletic teams. Dr. Ritter draws upon his years of personal experience as a student athlete, coach, and sideline physician at the professional, collegiate, and high school level to bring a unique perspective to treating elite competitive athletes as well as weekend warriors of all ages. Dr. Ritter has expertise in minimally invasive procedures, including knee and shoulder arthroscopy and ACL reconstruction. He was among the first on Long Island to perform arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and maintains a special interest in shoulder disorders. He treats all types of extremity fractures and is highly trained in all aspects of orthopedics, including carpal tunnel syndrome, foot and ankle problems, and total joint replacements. Having served on the board of directors of the Arthritis Foundation, Dr. Ritter applies his knowledge of the most current treatments to care for patients suffering from shoulder, hip, and knee arthritis. He is currently an at-large member of the medical board and vice president of the medical staff of Long Island Community Hospital. In his spare time, Dr. Ritter enjoys boating, fishing, tennis, and coaching youth sports. He is a passionate skier and a PADI-certified scuba diver who has logged some of the world's most exotic dives, including in the Red Sea and among giant manta rays in Kona, Hawaii.
